Richards playing through the pain barrier

Garry Richards’ impressive performances for Gillingham of late have come with the centre-back playing through the pain barrier.

Richards has been an integral part of a Gills defence which has kept three successive clean sheets, earning the praise of manager Andy Hessenthaler for his solid displays.

And he has done so having put injury to the back of his mind, telling the club’s official website: “I had a suspected cracked rib three weeks ago at Bournemouth. I’ve been sore and was taking painkillers but it’s better.

“I also had a tight groin as well, maybe due to the ribs but I’ll get treatment on that.”

Richards partnership with skipper Andy Frampton at the back has seen The Gills looking more solid than they have done for a long time and the pair should keep Matt Lawrence out of the side once again for this weekend’s visit of Bristol Rovers to Priestfield.

With Simon King still on the sidelines and Charlie Lee keeping Matt Fish out of the side, Gillingham have an abundance of riches if the whole squad are fit.
